Introduction

The Berkshire School of English was founded in 2015 as the ‘One Stop English Shop’ in Berkshire to work with individuals, their families, schools, and businesses to improve English skills.

We have created innovative learning programmes to help students understand everyday English language within the context of citizenship, Functional Skills, employment and the NHS. We offer opportunities to explore British culture through history, politics, food and entertainment, along with the social and cultural diversity that students are presented with when living and working in the UK today.

Our Community

Berkshire School of English (BSE) enjoys a multi-cultural learning community and prides itself on working with learners from all ethnicities and walks of life. In addition to our courses, we provide a meeting place  for conversation, activities and an ethos for building friendships, supporting cross-cultural community cohesion.

Our Staff

BSE is staffed by highly qualified teachers with many years experience delivering Functional Skills from pre-entry to Level 2. Not only have we worked with non-native speakers, we have worked with native English Speaking vulnerable adults in FE Colleges and with ex-offenders within the Probation Service.

Accredited Learning

BSE is a Recognised Centre for Laser Learning Awards. This means all of our courses can be formally accredited.

Kick Start Projects - Work with us

Kick Start Projects are designed for learners who may have tried a more traditional route back into education unsuccessfully and failed, or feel unable to attend larger FE colleges or training providers for a variety of reasons.

The projects provide the starting point for learners wishing to re-engage with English, Maths and Information Technology to improve health and wellbeing, re-connect with learning, gain employment and prepare for progression to more formal courses and further education.

Talk to us about your learners joining an established course or funding for a bespoke course for your own cohort either in our school or at your chosen location.

Working in Partnership

Over the last three years we have worked In partnership with West Berkshire Council Adult Community Learning and West Berkshire Family Hubs to successfully established four ESOL courses located in Calcot, Thatcham, Newbury and Lambourn. These courses will continue in 2018-2019.

We also work in partnership with West Berkshire Family Safeguarding Service and Targeted Intervention Service (TIS), Children and Family Services to support the Government Syrian Refugee Project. We provide a  60 hour intensive English programme, which includes community orientation and basic English Literacy skills.

We are currently piloting a project ‘Building Communities Together With British Culture, Community & Citizenship’, specifically aimed at ethnic minority adult learners with low to mid level English skills. The project is a gentle approach for learners to return to learning within the context of subjects of everyday living relevant to themselves, their families and their community.

We are a member of the West Berkshire  Community Learning Partnership.
